Lackland AFB Basic Training Graduation
Earlier in April I had the pleasure of attending Air Force Basic Training Graduation ceremonies at Lackland AFB. I had not been back to Lackland AFB since I went through Basic Training myself more than 25 years ago. It’s funny how sounds are drilled in your brain and when you hear the taps of those TI shoes even 25 years later you cringe. The Air Force Basic Training graduation has definitely grown over the years. We had a parade but no family members attended way back in the dark ages. Now, there are more than 700 graduates most Fridays and there are family members everywhere. If you have a trainee, plan ahead and make an attempt to get there in time for all of the events. On Thursday morning, there will be an Airman’s run. If you think, ask your Airman what color tshirt they will be wearing. It makes looking for the flight easier than trying to spot the flight number on the guidon flag. The run is held directly behind the BMT Reception center. It doesn’t matter which side of the road you are on because the trainees run past, then turn and come back by you so you can see both sides of the flights. That doesn’t mean you will be sure you see your trainee, I was not able to pick my son out of his group. It’s hard since they are moving and you are trying to just catch a glimpse.
In the afternoon on Thursday there is a coin ceremony held on the drill pad behind the BMT Reception center, get there early to get a seat. And on Friday assuming you have no rain, there will be a parade at the parade field. In case of rain the gradaution is done at the Squadron.
In between these, and over the weekend your Airman will get Base Liberty and town pass. This will give you time to hear all about their Air Force Basic Training experience. I highly recommend making the time to attend this special event in your Airman’s life.
