Not So Ice Cream Adventurous
If you have read my earlier blogs, you know that I have been trying new flavors of ice cream since we got here. Avacado Ice cream is still my favorite but we have tried Cheese Ice Cream (yes Cheddar type!), Ube Ice Cream,(sweet potato which is purple), Mungo Ice cream (made from a bean) and Macapuno Ice cream (kinda like coconut). SO yesterday when we were in the store Johnnie decided to choose something new and picked one named Golden Langka. I had no clue what a Langka was. I even commented that we probably should not buy what we could not identify but he reminded me that we bought Macapuno that way and we both liked it. So we bought it. Thankfully we did not open it last night and this morning I decided to look it up. Oh goodness, I think we have just come to a halting point on trying ice cream without knowing what is in it. Langka is Jackfruit.
Many of you know Johnnie has had several allergic reactions to fruits that have seeds/pits. Not to long after we got here, we went out to eat and followed the evening out walking through the fruit markets. They let you sample the fruit and Johnnie sampled the jackfruit. Most of the time he can tell he is allergic by a numbing in his tongue but he didn’t really think this time. He ate a rather big piece of the fruit. Within a minute he looked and me, handed me his wallet to pay for what we were buying and said, ” I have to get out of here.” I knew instantly he was not in good shape. He was violently ill from that single bite of fruit. I tried to convince him we should find a hospital but he is a stubborn guy. I didn’t give him the option of driving us home though. So that was my first time to drive in the traffic here, on a Friday night, already shaken from wondering if he was going to be ok.
So today, I find out Langka is Jackfruit. Now perhaps it is cooked enough that it would not bother him. But considering that he is in the bed sick today I had to go ask him, “did you eat ice cream?” He was confused by the question, says his stomach hurts to much for ice cream. I just said it would probably hurt even more if he had eaten it. So no more ice cream adventures until I can look up the name and know what we are eating! I am not up to any ER runs or worrying about whether the ice cream is going to close his air way off!.
