Fun Food

Published by jckat at 12:29 am under Uncategorized Edit This

One of the fun parts of being in a different country is trying out the new foods, or seeing how the American foods are served. Sometimes you my order your favorite American snack and find out it doesn’t taste quite the same. We’ve tried some new things, and we’ve tried things we’ve had before with a new twist to them. With the climate here, fruits are plentiful.  I can remember the first time we saw a pummelo in Florida.  I had never heard of them. If you are not familiar, a pummelo is the ancestor to a grapefruit and is larger. It has a citrusy taste but is not as tangy as grapefruit.  Pummelos have a thick skin and a lot of pith and can be hard to peel due to their size. PummeloYou often need to score the peel with a knife to be able to peel them.  It was a pleasant surprise to find pummelo in the markets here, and even more pleasant to see packages of already peeled sections of the fruit. It’s a little more expensive this way but the packagaes are a little more than a dollar.

We’ve been to several malls this week trying to get our Christmas shopping done. Plus here, the mall includes the grocery store.  The kids were happy to hit the food court and see what the choices were. Of course first stop for them is to have a mango shake/slushie but once that was done they scoped out the options. Many countries are represented here so the choices are hard to make.  This weekend Ariel chose Japanese and had Yakitori.  I think this will be her favorite for a while and it is surprisingly inexpensive. One stick is about 50 cents. Of course with her and Chris both eating you need at least 6 for starters!

More to come about food. Tonight we are attending a Boodle Fight. I’m hoping to get some good photos to share from it.
